Nureyev was a thoroughbred racehorse from Kentucky in America who raced throughout the United Kingdom and France between 1979 and 1980.
His most notable racing wins include Prix Thomas Bryon (1979) and Prix Djebel (1980). His racing awards include Leading sire in France (1987) and Leading broodmare sire in Great Britain/Ireland (1997). Source: Wikipedia page on Nureyev.
The finale of Nureyev's racing career saw the famous racehorse struck by a virus and subsequently retired from racing by his owners, Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard, in France. The horse was put to stud in 1981 where he sired 135 stakes winners and several champions. His breeding career almost ended when he suffered near-fatal fracture to his right hind leg. Luckily veterinary surgeons were able to operate on the leg, saving Nureyev's life.
Nureyev appears throughout the thoroughbred bloodlines of the horses at Angrove Stud. He is both Angrove Ricco's Grandsire and Angrove Dancing Girl's Grandsire. Of course, their coloured progeny, Angrove Spotted Dick, also inherits Nureyev's thoroughbred bloodlines from his sire and dam.
